Learning to Read
At Stockton Heath Primary School, we firmly believe reading is central to your child's development. From EYFS through to Year 2 we follow the 'Letters and Sounds' programme to help your child progress with their development in reading. This programme ranges from Phase 1 to Phase 6. Children take part in daily discrete 'Letters and Sounds' phonic sessions in which they are taught phonemes (sounds) and 'Blending for Reading.' In these sessions children are taught phonemes in fun and active activities and are encouraged to blend to read- children recognise a sound, hear it, say it and blend each of them together to make a word.
Across school, we also operate a daily guided reading model to support your child in progressing in their reading.
In KS1 the children have the opportunity to read and discuss a text with a teacher one day and then a teaching assistant the following day. During the week they will also complete activities aimed at developing thier independence in reading.
At KS2 your child will have a weekly guided reading session with their teacher based on a particular text. For the other 4 days in the week, they will then participate in other activities linked to the text they are reading as well as participating in grammar or language activities.
We utilise a range of reading schemes including Rigby Star, Bug Club etc.
We recognise that parent partnership is a crucial tool in your child's progress. We encourage children to read their home/school reading book every evening and record your chid's progress in their reading log book. We expect all children in EYFS and KS1 to be reading to a parent at least 5 times a week and at KS2 3 times a week. This must be recorded and signed by an adult in their reading record book.
